PRESS RELEASE 19 November, 2016 C.L.A.R.O. HOLDS 11th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING C.L.A.R.O. held its 11th Annual General Meeting in the Asturias Restaurant on 18 November against the background of uncertainties resulting from the Brexit referendum. A hard Brexit which endangered access to free public health care and pension levels would have severe consequences for British citizens individually and since British residents in Orihuela Costa account for nearly 50% of the resident population, if large numbers were to leave Spain and…

DON’T RISK LOSING IT ALL – VOTE IN THE REFERENDUM ON UK MEMBERSHIP OF THE EUROPEAN UNION Orihuela Costa’s political party C.L.A.R.O. was founded 10 years ago on the principle that exercising the right to vote was a legitimate, democratic and essential way to defend our interests in relation to the local government of Orihuela.   We think the same principle applies in relation to the 23 June referendum on the United Kingdom’s continuing membership of the European Union. The recent headline in an influential local newspaper “YOU COULD LOSE IT ALL” was…

ORIHUELA COSTA – WHAT IS RELEVANT AND IMPORTANT? The politicians and political parties in Orihuela don't get it. They cannot appreciate what is important for Orihuela Costa and what is not. Two examples illustrate this regrettable fact.On Sunday, 21 February neighbours called the fire brigade to extinguish a burning rubbish container in Calle Salzillo, not far from the La Zenia roundabout. They were concerned that the flames could spread to nearby houses. 40 minutes later a fire engine appeared. In the meantime, the…

MEGA PROJECT FOR BUILDING 4000 NEW HOUSES IN ORIHUELA COSTA MAY BE REJECTED Good news.   The Valencia regional government is reported to be questioning a mega-project to build nearly 4000 new houses in Orihuela Costa which could increase the population by some 10,000 new residents.    Orihuela Costa already has 35,000 residents, more than Orihuela city, contributes over 60% of the revenues of the municipality and receives in return inadequate services such as street cleaning, has no proper parks and gardens and not even a police station open 24…

"Voting shambles".... "a tactical ploy which probably worked". These were the heading and conclusions of a letter to the Editor of a prominent, local English language newspaper. They sum up exactly what C.L.A.R.O. thinks about the organisation of the municipal elections in Orihuela Costa on 24 May.There was confusion in the description of the voting centres on the Voting Cards (tarjetas censales) informing registered voters where they should vote. The Playa Flamenca Town Hall (Ayuntamiento)…

ELECTION RESULTS – ORIHUELA 2015 The Popular Party was the winner in the municipal elections in Orihuela on 24 May. Despite being divided, they secured 11 seats in the new Town Council, two short of an absolute majority. On the left, the Socialists and Change Orihuela won 10 seats. Ciudadanos, which is the former discredited CLR party, won 3 seats. Unfortunately, C.L.A.R.O. failed by some 50 votes to keep its one councillor. We will see soon if the Popular Party…

C.L.A.R.O. PRESENTS ITS CANDIDATES LIST FOR LOCAL ELECTIONS C.L.A.R.O. has presented its list of candidates for the forthcoming local elections in Orihuela on 24 May. There will be 13 parties competing for the votes of the people living in Orihuela, city and coast, more than in any other municipality in the area. Compared to previous years, the political scene in Orihuela is very confused with widespread political division and fragmentation. It is very important in this situation that the voice of Orihuela Costa…

CAMPAIGN TO REMOVE ILLEGAL WASTE TIPS C.L.A.R.O. Councillor Bob Houliston presented a Motion in the full Orihuela council meeting (Plenary) on 25 March calling for a campaign to remove the ugly, illegal waste tips which are widespread throughout Orihuela Costa and elsewhere in the municipality. These tips, which are on public as well as private land, contain everything from builders rubble, discarded furniture, sanitary ware, television sets and,  in Orihuela Costa, garden waste.     It is of course illegal to dump waste…
